In addition to surviving Sweet William, In-studio candidates for membership had to recite the Hoot Owl Oath -- letter perfect.

During the program's initial broadcasts the "meeting" dealt with the arrival of a $5 contribution fromm a listener.  Constituting the Hoot Owls' treasury, the question of what to do with the money was a topic of debate among the Degree Team and listeners.  One week ideas abounded.  The next week the money was missing.  What to do?  Then it was found and the debate resumed -- but never concluded.

Another early controversy:  Should the Hoot Owls admit women?  Listeners chimed in.  Male and female.  Some suggested created an "auxilary" for the Hoot Owls with the women gathered at the base of the "Home Roost" in an obviously subservient role.  Others argued in favor of equal membership.  The debate raged for weeks with much humor.  In fact, there was only one women ever admitted into members, Nellie Revell, an entertainment promoter with whom the Hoot Owls were friendly.
