Harry S. Grannatt, an insurance man who got his start in radio in San Francisco as an avocation, was an incredibly prolific writer of both words and music as well as fine performer with a keen wit.  Grannatt joined the Hoot Owls in 1926, shortly after moving to Portland, and began providing increasing amounts of fully-scripted material for the program in addition to performing.  By 1929, when Grannatt had become the programs principal scriptwriter, the Hoot Owls  moved to a fully-scripted format (although script for individual bits were still contributed by other members of the Degree Team for which Grannatt simply left holes in his full program script).

A collection of some of Grannatt's Hoot Owls contributions was published in 1929 as a second volume of Hoot Owls Classics.  Enough copies were sold that it went into a second printing.
