Throughout the program's history the Hoot Owls engaged in a variety of publicity stunts.  One of the most elaborate occurred in 1931 when Harry Grannatt and Charles L. "Ted" Baum were accused to stealing an Oregon State Fair badge while attending a Fair planning meeting.  Actual police officers showed up during the next week's Hoot Owls broadcast and "arrested" the two on the air.  A "trial" was subsequently held (with a real judge who happened to be a Hoot Owl member) on the air.
