Berg was a prominent retailer with a shop catering to higher fashion items for women. He was also active in the Portland Advertising Club (commonly known as the Ad Club) which annually put on a variety show in which Ad Club members performed with ticket proceeds going to a local charity. Piper, Callvert and Berg met (apparently shortly after New Years Day, 1923, kicked around ideas for a program and Berg agreed to enlist some fellow Ad Club members for the effort.
