The Hoot Owls were a huge sensation both locally, regionally and nationally. Numerous articles about the program appeared in national magazines.
It is thought that the outlandish Degree Team names were a subtle attempt to poke fun at the Ku Klux Klan which was ascending in influence in Oregon at the time the Hoot Owls first tookto the air. In 1925 the Fraternal Order of Owls sued against the program contending that the program demeaned fraternal organizations in general and their organization in particular.
