One of the earliest and most-longstand Degree Team members was Dean Collins. A journalist, poet and columnist (Oregonian 1911-1917 and Portland Telegram 1917-1918, and 1924 -1925), hew also worked on the publicity staff for the Universal Film Company from 1918 to 1921 in both Portland, Oregon and Hollywood. From 1931 to 1952, Collins served as a columnist, writer of radio scripts, and garden editor for the Oregon Journal newspaper. He also wrote freelance plays, pageants, and radio scripts, was an instructor for Portland Civic Theater 1932 - 1937 and a lecturer at the University of Oregon from 1938-1942. Collins wrote a great deal of the Hoot Owls material until 1927 and some of that work was published in 1928 as the Hoot Owls Classics (shown).
