Berg's wife had died shortly after giving birth to their son, Forrest, who had then been raised in San Francisco.  As an adult he pursued a successful career in the retail clothing industry and, following his father's first heart attack in 1922, the son came to Portland to  assist his father.  However, it was not until late in the decade that Forrest joined the Hoot Owls (as "Grand Squeak") to help assist his father with the considerable responsiblity of helming the Hoot Owls program.  A talented singer, Forrest also often performed on the program.
